Moab Photography Workshop Model Photo

This photo was taken at the recent Moab photography workshop and postproduced on my laptop.

By popular demand, we’re back in Nashville, Tennessee for one last time! This is a special photography workshop with five models and limited in size at a private residence in Nashville–details given only to registered attendees. Don’t hesitate, this is your chance for a one-day glamour, beauty and the nude photography workshop at a great price and location!

This workshop is open to photographers of all levels, beginners to advanced, though you must be over 18-years of age. We’ll have a small lecture, hands-on photography instruction, then we shoot, shoot, shoot, five talented models. First-come, first serve! Limited in size! Once it sells out, it’s sold-out!

Here are the particulars:

1. You must pay for your own lodging and travel.

2. Bring your camera, preferrably a DSLR. It must have a hot shoe (where you flash slides on top) or as a minimum, a PC connection for our studio flash–we provide all equipment.

3. You must have the passion to photograph up to five beautiful models. The type of photography is glamour, beauty and nude photography for most models. You will have almost a whole day to photograph them in all their beauty, from glamour to editorial/glamour nude.

4. While it’s intense, we’ll have fun in this educational experience. We’ll provide lunch, you provide the coffee if you need it, but surely bring some Red Bull for energy because this is an energized workshop.

5. Camera requirements are any type of camera, preferably 35mm DSLR or SLR, medium or large format is optional. Lens focal range, from 24mm to 200mm, though a typical 70-200mm lens is all you need. A back-up drive to download your images every evening and/or laptop computer is highly recommended. If you have a Sony (Minolta) camera, please ensure you have a hot shoe adapter or PC connection.

6. Professionalism is required, we’re there to capture beautiful images of beautiful models. If you have Pocket Wizard remotes, bring them too, though not required as we’ll have our own radio triggers. We’ll work with beauty dishes, softboxes, reflectors and more, all provided by us!

If you can meet the requirements and you have the passion to create some beautiful, unique images, this is the workshop for you. We accept payments securely through PayPal and have other options if you prefer. This is a first-come, first-serve event as class size is limited. Model releases are optional but encouraged. This is the early-bird price, prices will go up soon, so don’t delay, book now before it’s too late! Please use the PayPal button below. We’ve used PayPal securely for 14-years.

Model releases for the event is $60 per model at the end of the day. These are voluntary releases, but highly encouraged as these models will be working for you. These releases are provided and allow you to use the images for commercial use and the only restriction is prohibited use for adult related material—nudes are artistic and glamour nude only at this workshop when it comes to nudity.

You are required to arrive no later than 9:30 a.m. local time on the workshop day. We end at 5:00 p.m both days.

Cancellation rules apply as this is a first-come, first-serve event limited in size. Don’t get left behind, don’t miss out on a wonderful opportunity. We can’t allow too many people on the property, it’s very limited in size, so don’t delay, act now an save before prices go up!

Glamour, Beauty & the Nude With Wolves

Model, Wolves, Drumheller, Canada, Photography, Photo

From my first photo shoot in Drumheller. I basically took the original photo and mirrored it for an unexpected surprise.

Date: 6/7–6/10, 2012 (Arrive on Thursday, June. 7, 2012, depart on Sunday evening, June 10th)
Venue: Drumheller, Alberta, Canada
Details: Limited in Size, Personal, Semi-Private Instruction Format

Ever want to get away, like to really get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and photograph beautiful models? We’ve got an exclusive photography experience just for you—but only if you want to experience something very few photographers will ever have in their portfolio—wolves and models, plus a few more surprises like “hoodoo’s!” While there is somewhat of a workshop feel to this exotic shoot, because of the size, it’s more like a “semi-private” instruction course. More personal, more intimate, more time for shooting, more hands—on instruction than a larger workshop group.

Arrive into Calgary, Alberta, Canada, then travel less than two hours to Drumheller, Alberta, Canada. We’ll meet there at a recommended hotel—given only to the participants. This semi-private instruction format is limited to only four photographers, and an assistant. We’ll have at least three if not four models for your shooting pleasure.

Timber Wolf, Model, Alberta, Canada, Photo

We'll work with purebred wolves like this timber wolf using professional wolf handlers.

While the weather will be warmer than my recent shoot with the wolves, here is a great blog post (click here, new window opens) to give you an idea of how my first shoot with the wolves went, though remember, we’ve got some other concepts you’ll be able to capture so your photo shoots will be unique to this photography experience. The idea is simple, create some extraordinary photos very, very, few people in our world will ever have in their portfolios—separating you from the pack of other photographers and you’ll be guided all the way by Rolando, personally! For safety, we’ll have assistants and professionally trained wolf handlers.

Here are the particulars:

1. You must pay for your own lodging, meals and travel, we’ll provide suggestions and the recommended hotel of choice. This will also provide for “working” lunches and dinners where we can all discuss the day’s events and the upcoming shoots.

2. You must be physically fit enough to walk a city block and lift 25 lbs. We will be using Hensel battery portable lighting equipment and California Sunbounce reflectors.

3. You must have the passion to photograph up to four beautiful models and patient enough for them to change into wardrobe. The type of photography is glamour, beauty and nude photography for most models, but the focus is capturing the beauty of the female form with wolves and other interesting items like “hoodoo” rock formations.

Model, Wolves, Drumheller, Canada, Photography, Photo, Hoodoo

"Hoodoo's" are located in the area along with other old architecture we'll utilize in our shoot.

4. These are long days, which means late dinners along with early mornings—you will get tired by the time you have to leave, but you will treasure every moment and leave with amazing photos.

5. Camera requirements are any type of camera, preferably 35mm DSLR or SLR, medium or large format is optional. Lens focal range, from 24mm to 300mm, though a typical 70-200mm lens is all you need. A back-up drive to download your images every evening and/or laptop computer is highly recommended.

6. Professionalism is required, we’re there to capture beautiful images of beautiful models in a remote, but beautiful location with wild animals. Safety is number one.

7. The cost, $1299 plus your meals and logistics. Because this is a very small group, no discounts apply. Only four slots! Use the secure, PayPal button below for payment.

We’ve used PayPal now for over 13-years securely! If you prefer a different payment method, please contact me with all your contact information including phone number and best time to call.

If you can meet the requirements and you have the passion to create some beautiful, unique images, this is the workshop for you. While this is our second trip to the Drumheller area, this is our first semi-private instruction format for this shoot and this might be the only time Rolando offers this format. Rolando is limiting his workshop schedule for 2012, so this is a very unique opportunity as future years are looking very limited as Rolando shifts his focus on a more on-line format. This is a first-come, first-serve event and due to limited slots, this workshop has a tighter cancellation policy (see below).

Grim Reaper Photo, Alberta, Canada, Wolves, Models

Here is an example photo of the possiblities not normally found in a photographer's portfolio.

Model releases for this event is $100 per model at the end of the event ($400 total for the entire event). These are mandatory releases, not optional like other workshops, paid on the last day of the event. These releases are provided by Rolando and allow you to use the images for commercial use and the only restriction is prohibited use for adult related material—nudes are artistic and glamour nude only. We will allow time for private shooting if preplanned in advance, though this time will be very limited and additional compensation will be necessary for the talent. This workshop is open to all levels, but places an emphasis  that you seriously want to capture some great shots and take your photography up to the next level! You must be over 18-years of age to attend.

You are required to arrive no later than 7:00 p.m., local time, in Drumheller on a Thursday and meet at a central location that evening, then be prepared to shoot all day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Departure is your choice, you can leave that Sunday night or Monday on your own or when you choose. Hotel recommendations will be provided, most hotels are close together and average from $100 to $160 per night but we have a preferred locationt, but only revealed to you upon booking your workshop slot. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and lodging are not included. While we might consolidate transportation once we get started, transportation is not provided to get from your point of origin and Drumheller. We’ll do our best to “group” everyone to save on travel once we all arrive in Drumheller.

This semi-private instruction format includes personal instruction from Rolando and use of his lighting gear along with the models and make-up. You are guaranteed to produce some great images you can be proud of. This is not a typical format and because of the limited size of the class, there are no refunds or cancellations allowed, however, we’ll consider everyone on a case by case basis should an emergency arise. Should a cancellation refund be approved, there is a 30-day waiting period. We require a minimum of two photographers for this workshop, but should we not meet that requirement, then you are entitled to a full refund.

Exotic Glamour, Beauty & The Nude Workshop, Virgin Islands, #30

Date: Nov. 8-13, 2012 (Early Bird Pricing!)
Venue: U.S. Virgin Islands
Details: The first Virigin Islands worskhop sold-out in less than 2-weeks! Most of the VI workshops for the past eight years sell-out almost a year in advance! Here’s your chance if you missed out in the past eight years! Only 12 Photographers and six Models for this workshop. First-come, first-serve!

This is year eight in the Virgin Islands and our 14th year conducting workshops! This is also our last Virgin Islands workshop for 2012 and if there is another in 2013, it’s at least a year away!

This is our 30th Virgin Islands workshop. The dates are Nov. 8-13, 2012. Fly in on Nov. 8th (Thurs.) into St. Thomas (Airport code STT) then we ferry you over to a smaller island where it’s a private, camp-style workshop–open to all levels of photography, from beginners to advanced–your departure day is Nov. 13th, (Tuesday) unless you choose to stay longer in St. Thomas on your own. Nov. 12th is our private shoot day. While not mandatory, on our private shoot day, we encourage it to work with your favorite models on a “one on one”  hourly basis.

These workshops promise more than the best workshops ever done–this is not a foreign country, this is the U.S. Virgin Islands! No currency conversions, no foreign language, no crazy inflated value-added taxes or worries about the food and water or your camera equipment held in customs till you pay the “bribe.” Currently, for U.S. citizens, a U.S. passport it not required, provided you present a government issued identification card, such as a driver’s license. Non-U.S. citizens require a passport.

We’ve got a place that rocks! The location was featured on HGTV and Brad Pitt even filmed parts for one of his movies on this secluded island. It’s not your “typical tourist hotel” trap found in other workshops–this is a private paradise 10-minutes from St. Thomas giving us great sunsets, sunrises, private infinity-pool shots with the ocean blue/green waters and golden sunsets in the background.

Complete with bbq’s, outdoor activities and a dinner on the beach after sunset, this workshop is better than the best workshops ever held! We even had one photographer sign-up for ten Virgin Islands workshops and another for five plus two Moab photography workshops, so all photography slots sell fast! We have a high return rate of previous attendees!

Limited to 12 photographers only! That’s right, we’ll shoot six beautiful models in groups of two photographers per one model, the whole time you’re there–you will photograph every model. There is no room for more than twelve photographers, period. Prices will eventually go up if not booked early! We’ll be staying on a private island off St. Thomas in a “camp-like” style environment as we enjoy the use of three houses with full facilities including internet connection DSL, refrigerator, stove, satellite TV, and phone plus we’ll serve breakfast and provide lunch options.

This package includes lodging during the workshop and most drinks and food–there is two optional evening dinners at your expense as we provide some of the dinners. Your responsibility, get there! Fly into St. Thomas. From there you’ll have the greatest time photographing models without hotel distractions, tourist distractions, etc…total focus on what we’re there for, the glamour, beauty and the nude photography of beautiful women. This is outdoor photography in a tropical setting!

This is a first-come, first-serve, non-refundable workshop. The workshop attendees will not be staying in a hotel, we’ll be staying in fully equipped houses that are cottage style, complete with satelite TV, DSL, refrigerator, stove, etc.–your house on a private island. Early-bird price is $1499, save $500 today before prices go up to $1999. Please use the button below to pay securely with PayPal.

Use this special button to reserve your “Early Bird” price at $1499 today, regular price resumes to $1999 before you know it! Save $500 now! Rates will go up after first four attendees sign-up, so save now Guarantee your slot!

Lighting is provided for sun-overpowering shots, though you may bring your own lighting too. We’ll have some California Sunbounce scrims and reflectors, again, you may bring your own too. Make-up and hair provided for the models too.

Rolando will cover many topics, from basics, fundamentals and concepts that you can use in glamour photography and other genres of photography. Emphasis on lighting, posing, and the ability to see and feel the light. You’ll get hands on instruction and demonstrations. Overpowering the sun with flash will be a big focus along with beach and pool shoots.

Rolando will walk you through, step by step showing you the in’s and out’s of the image, at the same time, every photographer will have his or her time to photograph lovely, photogenic models from sunrise to sunset. The emphasis is to take photographs not pictures. Plus much, much more!

Three full-days of shooting and one optional day to book private shoots! Private shoots are optional and will be scheduled reasonably for a small additional charge–this money goes straight to the model–first come, first serve. Shooting will be from sunrise to sunset–just like if you’re on assignment for publication. The workshop attendees will stay in three “home-style” cottages with kitchens, baths, refrigerators, etc., on an exotic island. DSL internet connection is available too along with satellite TV–though who will have time to watch TV? (grin) Time is allocated to enjoy the hot tub and swimming pool during non workshop hours–yes, have fun in the sun, work hard, and capture great images!

All proceeds are non-refundable, but we will allow you to transfer your seat should you have to change your plans with at least a 90-day notice. You must do the transfer on your own as we will not refund anyone due to the small size of this workshop.

Over 6,000 students have attended Rolando’s workshops and speaking engagements in the past thirteen years–Rolando is the only current glamour workshop instructor with national speaking credentials, a glamour DVD, photography book author, photo magazine staff writer with national and international tearsheets. Rolando also discovered the April 2006 Playboy Playmate for Playboy–she attended the April 2006 VI workshop as an actual model too! This workshop is open to all levels of photographers, from beginners to advanced–Rolando will take time to work with new photographers and will answer your questions before, during and after the workshop. No one is leaving the island until it’s over!

The workshop is intense, but designed for everyone. Breakfast and lunch are available every day upon arrival. Evening supper will be furnished two of the five days. Three days of supper will be your responsibility as we’re giving you the choice of staying on the island or going to St. Thomas. Refreshments will be provided. You can also venture off to St. Thomas for lunch on your own.

The price is for workshop and lodging costs and most meals, you are responsible for all travel. The price includes three solid days of shooting with models. We break the twelve photographers in teams of two, so you always work with a partner but never have to wait in line. Models are rotated daily to allow for major shoots with one model at a time per day–you will photograph all six models. We reserve the fourth shooting day for private shooting for a small additional fee, this is an optional day after your three solid days of shooting, for your favorite models. This system works so good we’ve had many repeat customers to the VI workshops.

Make-up will be provided and images may be used in off-line, personal and web portfolios, however, you can, for an additional $80 (paid to the model by the photographer, only once and covers all three days), secure an unrestricted release (except for adult pay-sites or membership sites), full use, including nudity. Releases are provided, and securing releases are optional and not mandatory, but highly encouraged.

First Come, First Serve Basis–limited seating–Reserve Your Slot Now!

A minimum of seven people must attend otherwise the workshop will be canceled and refunds will be immediately provided. Rolando has never canceled a Virgin Islands or exotic photography workshop in the past 13 years. Feel Free to email Rolando Gomez should you have any questions at rolando(at)rolandogomez.com with a CC copy to gophotog(at)gmail(dot)com and include your contact information and best time to call.

Framing Industry Conspiracy

I’ve lectured and taught photography to thousands of people over the past decade with over 250 workshops and seminars around the world and often people tell me, or I see it when they are shooting while “chimping” with their LCD screen, how they leave room for cropping their images to make the photo fit a matte and/or picture frame.  Obviously this is a problem more inherent to the United States, not for Europe.

My first thought is why? My second thought is you obviously have never worked with a photo editor for publication. My last thought is you probably bought your camera based on mega-pixel hype, or on the Jones’s standard, I have more mega-pixels than you.

Let’s look at the why part first. We’re a society that tends to be programmed as we grow up in life. Most of use grew up with (in inches) 11×14′s, 8×10′s, 5×7′s and the 3 1/2 x 5′s, the latter made famous by the Noritsu one-hour mini-lab explosion of the 1980′s. Though the 3 1/2×5′s graduated to 4×6′s, our problems with mandatory societal-cropping (think frames, mattes and photo albums) still didn’t end with our 35mm format cameras. Part of the non-ending I base on what I like to call, “the framing industry conspiracy theory” to sell us mattes with our frames. And to ground my theory, let’s look how it all developed, no pun intended, or the second part of obviously you’ve never worked with photo editors or editors before. [Read more...]
